Poker is a card game in which players place bets on the outcome of a hand. There are many different variations of the game but they all share some fundamental rules. The most important rule is that players must place a bet before seeing their cards, this creates a pot immediately and encourages competition. The other important rule is that the best hand wins. This is determined by the ranking of the cards in your hand and the community cards on the table.

Most games are played with 6-8 players but there are also versions of the game for fewer or more players. Each player has two personal cards and the table is covered with five community cards. A player can make a poker hand by combining these cards into one of the following combinations:

The dealer deals each player two personal cards and then places three more community cards face up on the table. These are known as the flop. After a betting round the dealer puts another card on the table that everyone can use, this is called the turn.

When it is your turn to act you can choose whether to call, raise or fold. Calling means to place a bet equal to the amount that the player in front of you raised. Raising means to increase the amount that you are betting by an additional amount. Learning to read the players at your table is an essential part of the game. This isn’t always easy as it requires attention to subtle physical tells, but a good understanding of how your opponent plays can lead to big profits.
